18/05/11: David Price OBE on the Harris Student Commission

David has some very good things to say about the commission in his blog:

'...this is what students having agency in their own learning looks like. This is what happens when you place great trust and responsibility in student's capacity to be thoughtful, respectful, sensitive and creative: they never, ever let you down.

...fully implemented, they [the entitlements] are capable of transforming a previously 'top-down' hierarchy, into a real, democratic learning environment, and creating a genuine learning commons out of a high-performing, but ultimately disengaging, learning enclosure.

And, if you could do just one thing which would fundamentally change the learning relationships in your school, do this.'

08/02/11: From the mouths of Harris students

A few weeks ago Caireen spent the morning interviewing Student Commissioners from the Harris Federation about their experiences in the role. Yet again she was reminded of what a powerful process the Student Commission has been for them, and of the passion and dedication they, and their teachers, have shown.

"I wasn’t always the best of students. But I joined the student commission and my perspective of learning changed. I can appreciate it, I can lead it and I can help others love learning like I do.”

“Now I know there is surface learning and deep learning. Surface learning is accepting the answers whereas deep learning is going into the answers, finding out where they originate, how they work and what impact they have.”

I love that my little one (Lucas, 3) flicks about with my iPhone like he's a grown up, but this week I found out he'd clocked up sixty quid selling virtual cookies in a virtual bakery. That I love not so much.

03/08/10: Homenearthesea - our home renovation journey

IMG_0193.JPGWe have taken on a major new project. A 1930s house half a mile from the sea in the village of Ovingdean (where we live now). It is in a sorry state and we have made it our mission to revive it and create a fab home. Oh, and we have to move in at the end of September. Mmm. Follow our progress at http://homenearthesea.posterous.com/

02/08/10: Vann Fest 2010

IMG_0294.jpgThis year we attended our third Vann Fest with our mates Mahrie and Dave. Despite the showers it was the best yet. Gene's fire, hot air balloon and Dave winning the water rocket competition particular highlights.
